“Home sweet home, for now anyway. Let’s do some research,” I decided, pulling out my laptop and opening several browser tabs. As I delved into the mayor’s involvement in various town projects, I couldn’t help but feel a tingle of excitement. My interest in the paranormal had grown since I discovered my own magical abilities, and I knew they could be the key to clearing my name.

“Look at this, Elvis,” I said, pointing at a news article. “Mayor Greene was planning to build a new casino on the outskirts of Magnolia Cove. That would have brought a lot of money into town, but also a fair share of problems.”

“Meow?” Elvis questioned, tilting his head as he gazed at the screen.

“Gambling, crime, driving under the influence, noise pollution ... you know, all the things that tend to follow casinos around. Then there’s more desperation and of course, more people. When someone loses it all, they may turn to crime to pay the bills. And everyone knows that organized crime is who runs casinos,” I explained. “I bet there were plenty of people opposed to this idea. Oh my gosh, Elvis! I wonder if that’s what the mayor meant by this was bigger than him. Do you think he was in bed with the mafia?”

“Meow!” Elvis agreed, his eyes narrowing as if he sensed something amiss.

“Maybe we should pay a visit to some of the people who would have been affected by the casino,” I suggested. “If someone felt strongly enough about it to kill the mayor, we need to find them before they strike again.”

“Meow,” Elvis responded, hopping off the table and following me as I grabbed my coat and keys.

“Or maybe he double-crossed them? This isn’t cool,” I said. I could feel my eyes drying out from staring wide-eyed at my monitor. “If the mafia is in town or coming to town, have they corrupted the police force already? But of everyone in town, why would they frame me? Little ole me? I bet there are bigger and more powerful people that would serve them better to get rid of than a delivery service driver who somehow missed that this was even on our local radar. Even a bookstore owner. This is starting to make more sense. I should warn Dad. Maybe we shouldn’t be asking questions, but if we don’t, how will we clear my name?”

“Meow.”

“I can’t hear you,” I said, frustrated and too stressed to try to figure out what Elvis was trying to tell me. He knew how to communicate with me, and if he wanted me to know something or had something to say, he was going to have to do more than meow.

“It’s time to go to the meeting,” he said.

“Oh. Why didn’t you say so?”
